Trump confuses Clinton’s VP with former N.J. governor

Donald Trump slammed Hillary Clinton’s running mate as “not very popular in New Jersey” on Wednesday, even though Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine has never served as an elected official in the Garden State.

“Her running mate Tim Kaine, who by the way did a terrible job in New Jersey — first act he did in New Jersey was ask for a $4 billion tax increase and he was not very popular in New Jersey and he still isn’t,” Trump told reporters during a press conference in Doral, Florida.

Reporters were quick to notice that Trump appeared to have confused Kaine, a senator from Virginia, with former New Jersey Gov. Tom Kean.

“What? I meant Virginia,” Trump said when a member of the press tried to correct him.

According to the anti-tax group Americans for Tax Reform, Kaine did push for $4 billion in tax increases when he served as governor of Virginia from 2006 to 2010.

The possible Kaine-Kean mixup wasn’t Trump’s only verbal slip during the press conference. He also initially called attempted Ronald Reagan assassin John Hinckley, Jr. “David Hinckley.”
