GOODBYE FLUORESCENT BULB? If Philips is right, those of fluorescent-tube lamps in your office could soon be history.

CHEAPER, GREENER: Dutch consumer appliances giant Royal Philips NV says that it has developed an LED light that will be far more efficient than the best fluorescents on the market. That should make it cheaper and greener, as well.

FOR SALE IN 2015: A top Philips executive says the prototype LED is headed to mass production and will hit the market in 2015. He says that in 10 years, LEDs will replace at least half of the world’s fluorescent bulbs.
