BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — An inmate at a western New York jail faces additional charges after authorities say he tried to assault a nurse and then injured two deputies who intervened.

Erie County Sheriff Timothy Howard says the inmate was being evaluated by a nurse at the Erie County Holding Center Thursday when the alleged assault occurred. The nurse’s screams brought a response from three deputies who struggled to handcuff the inmate.

Deputies Daniel Miller and Terrance Vanderlip were injured in the process and taken to a Buffalo hospital for treatment. The extent of their injuries was not released.

Howard says the inmate, who was in custody for domestic violence, will face additional charges.
