Ukrainian officials have uncovered mass graves in the recently liberated city of Lyman in the Donetsk region, local outlets said.

There are roughly 200 graves on one plot, TCH, a Ukrainian-based news outlet reported, while Hromadske, another Ukrainian outlet, reported that some of the plots were marked with name plates while others were simply numbered.
Pavlo Kyrylenko, the head of Donetsk OVA, said: ”Now the law enforcement officers are investigating these places and will soon begin the exhumation process. I ask everyone to refrain from commenting on the number of buried people and the causes of their death until the final conclusions of the experts.”

Hromadske also reported that pro-Ukrainian residents were forced to collect the bodies from the streets.
“Lyman is cleared fully,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced last Sunday, while the Russian defense ministry acknowledged withdrawing its troops to get “more advantageous positions” and to avoid the “threat of encirclement” in the area.
“The story of the liberation of Lyman in Donetsk region has now become the most popular in the media. But the successes of our soldiers are not limited to Lyman,” he added, noting that Ukrainian forces had liberated the small towns of Arkhanhelske and Myrolyubivka in the Kherson region.
Ukrainian officials have uncovered atrocities against civilians following the Russian troops’ retreat in various Ukrainian cities throughout the war. Officials in these areas have uncovered the horrors of torture, executions, and sexual violence committed by Russian forces.

Ukraine’s continued counteroffensive successes have put Russian President Vladimir Putin’s back further into the corner as he looks for lifelines to help his military despite repeated setbacks and problems. Last month, he called up 300,000 reservists meant to reinforce Russia’s military in Ukraine, though it also spurred a mass exodus of eligible draftees.
Putin has continued to threaten to use a tactical nuclear weapon in the war, while President Joe Biden warned on Thursday about the possibility of a nuclear “Armageddon,” though the White House has maintained as recently as Friday that it has not seen a reason to change its nuclear posture.
