Gov. Chris Christie argued that Republicans who are not supporting Donald Trump’s presidential campaign are actively helping Hillary Clinton, noting “this is not some political science class” where there is another option.
“The absolute result of sitting out is a Hillary Clinton presidency,” Christie said Wednesday during an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”
The New Jersey governor said he “would love to live in a world” where voters could decline participation in an election simply because they don’t like their party’s nominee, but he said the choice is “binary” between Clinton and Trump.
Christie said he took a different approach to attacking Clinton in his speech at the Republican convention Tuesday evening because traditional attacks on the former secretary of state are not always effective.
“People in my party often get so angry about her that they yell and scream and they use divisive language that doesn’t get to the core of my problem with her,” Christie said.
He described that core problem as “her miserable failures” and not the more lewd scandals that have followed the Clintons for decades.
Christie was a vocal supporter of Trump following his own withdrawal from the presidential race. He was reportedly on the nominee’s shortlist of vice presidential contenders before Trump settled on Gov. Mike Pence.
