Yard sale to benefit crime victims

Montgomery County police staffers will hold a yard sale on Saturday in Rockville to benefit needy crime victims and their families.

“My office looks like the adjunct to the Salvation Army,” Germantown victims’ services coordinator Laurie Mombay said. “We’ve got adult and children’s clothing, household goods, toys, televisions, electronics and furniture that will be donated that day. You name it, it’s here.”

Mombay said she and others have been collecting donations for about a month. The Victim Services Unit, which provides crisis interventions and assistance to victims of all crimes, is sponsoring the event, and other departments are helping.

“Unfortunately, the poor tend to be harder hit when they’re crime victims,” Mombay said. “They get their purse snatched and they lose their rent money.”

Mombay said the money raised will be used to aid crime victims who do not have enough cash on hand to meet their financial obligations and cannot afford to wait the time it takes to process paperwork for victim assistance funds.

“It will help deal with urgent needs like giving people grocery cards, bus tickets and other help with transportation,” Mombay said. She said some of the money also will go to a holiday assistance fund the department runs each year in December to provide gifts for the children of needy crime victims.
