Werth could resume on Wednesday

Jayson Werth could resume baseball activities on Wednesday, Nationals manager Davey Johnson said, pending a doctor’s examination of his broken left wrist. The Nats are hoping to have Werth back the first week of August.

Amid the good news, there is growing concern about the oblique injury of shortstop Ian Desmond who was not in the starting lineup for the third straight day. Johnson said Desmond’s injury actually worsened during his four-day break all-star week.

Desmond’s injury is on his left side. It hurts when he completes his swing. According to Johnson, Desmond bunted over the weekend against Miami because it hurt too much for him to swing.

Johnson doesn’t rule out a stay on the disabled list, quoting Desmond before Tuesday’s game: “He said, ‘I think this is something that will be lingering all season.’”

Johnson also said catcher Jhonatan Solano was unavailable for Tuesday’s game with an oblique injury, but expects him to be available on Wednesday.
