Comedian Richard Lewis will be master of ceremonies for the Hebrew Home of Greater Washington’s Centennial Gala on Dec. 11 at the Washington Hilton. The black-tie event runs from 6:30 p.m. to midnight and includes dinner and several musical entertainers. Tickets start at $500 and can be purchased online by going to hebrew-home.org, then “Events.”
The organization’s roots go back to 1910, when 25-year-old salesman Hymen Goldman encountered an elderly Jewish homeless man weeping outside a grocery store. Goldman and a small group of people discussed the man’s plight, formed a small organization and collected funds that were used to board the elderly man in a widow’s home for $3 a week.
