House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy is slated to meet with Michael Fanone, a police officer who was injured during the riot at the Capitol on Jan. 6, two anonymous sources said.
Fanone, an officer for the Metropolitan Police Department, will join Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn and the mother of Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick, according to one of the sources and a third person familiar with the meetings. Sicknick died one day after defending the Capitol from a mob of rioters, and a medical examiner later ruled that he died of natural causes.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi will create a special partisan committee to investigate the attack, she said Thursday, adding that it was the only option left to move forward on an investigation of the Jan. 6 events after Senate Republicans blocked efforts to form a bipartisan commission.
Fanone established contact with McCarthy’s office Wednesday afternoon, he said, adding, “Trying to make an appointment with Kevin McCarthy is like trying to get an appointment with God.” The officer was also injured during the riots, with video evidence showing he was attacked by people in the crowd.

The riots were largely spurred by protesters storming the Capitol in a bid to halt the certification of the Electoral College vote in the 2020 election. Five people died as a result of the events.
Fanone, Dunn, and the deceased officer’s mother, Gladys Sicknick, lobbied Republican senators to approve House-passed legislation to form a bipartisan commission to examine the events of that day in an investigation akin to the 9/11 Commission.
The bill failed in the Senate, unable to gain the support of GOP members to get the 60 votes needed to overcome a Senate filibuster.
