FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — AutoNation saw new vehicle sales jump 16 percent to top 24,000 last month, as the auto dealership chain reported double-digit percentage gains in domestic, import and premium luxury lines.

The Fort Lauderdale, Florida, company said Thursday that import sales climbed 18 percent to nearly 11,600 compared to September 2013. Domestic sales rose 13 percent to 7,356 and premium luxury sales were up 17 percent to 5,126.

AutoNation Inc.’s sales from established stores rose 14 percent compared to September 2013. Sales at locations open at least a year are considered an important measurement of a retailer’s performance. The comparison excludes results from stores that opened or closed within the last year.

For the third quarter, AutoNation’s new vehicle sales climbed 10 percent to 84,225.

The automotive retailer owns and operates 273 new vehicle franchises, which sell 34 brands across 15 states.

Its stock closed at $49.10 on Wednesday and has slipped about 1 percent so far this year after climbing above $60 in July. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index is up more than 5 percent for the year.
