LANCASTER, N.Y. (AP) — Grief counseling is being offered for suburban Buffalo students mourning the death of a teenager who was killed when two small planes collided.
Officials in the Lancaster Central School District have issued a statement saying professionals and other staff trained in crisis response and grief counseling will be on hand Monday morning and through the coming days.
Authorities say 14-year-old James Metz, a freshman at Lancaster High School, was a passenger on a single-engine Cessna that collided with an amateur-built plane during an aviation event held at Buffalo-Lancaster Regional Airport. The 78-year-old man piloting the Cessna was also killed.
The 59-year-old man piloting the other plane and the 9-year-old girl riding with him survived when he crash-landed in a field in Lancaster.
The collision occurred during an event to introduce children to aviation.
