ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Green Party candidate Howie Hawkins says the debates in the New York governor’s race should be televised and should include all candidates qualified for the ballot.
Hawkins came in third in the 2010 race and faces Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Rob Astorino in November’s election.
Hawkins will participate in a televised debate with Cuomo, Astorino and Libertarian Michael McDermott sometime next month. The only other debate, broadcast on public radio, will not include third-party candidates.
Hawkins said Tuesday that’s not right, and says every debate should be broadcast and should include each qualified candidate.
He says he would support a change to state law that would require candidates for governor to participate in a series of public debates.
Specific dates for the debates haven’t been announced.
