Caps First Period Update

Caps 1, Sabres 0

Alex Ovechkin notches No. 17 on the year with an end-to-end rush that pretty much turned an ineffective shift that was about to end into a productive one. Caps only had seven shots in that period – but there were a couple of real nice scoring chances. Ryan Miller used his glove to stop both Tomas Fleischmann and Mike Green late in the period. Both were hard shots near the circles.

I tweeted this earlier – but check out the Examiner this Sunday. We’ll have the Top 10 goals scored by Alex Ovechkin in his brief five-year career. The Sabres make a few appearances on my list – though tonight’s probably wouldn’t crack the Top 25, as good as it was. Ovechkin now has 12 goals in 16 games vs. Buffalo. Per Caps PR – This is Ovechkin’s 19th game. He has scored Washington’s first goal nine different times. Six of those were the first goal of the game overall. No one else in the NHL has done that more.

Jeff Schultz had the “assist” on Ovechkin’s goal – No. 5 this season to go with a goal and his first point since Oct. 27. Obviously, Ovechkin did most of the work on that one, but the Double Nickel will take it. Schultz had just 12 points all of last season so he’s halfway there. Shots overall in that period were 9-7 in favor of Buffalo. Caps won 7 of 13 faceoffs. No penalties called on either team so you know what that means.
