Prince George’s County emergency officials helped 60 people escape floodwaters on Wednesday and Thursday, fire department spokesman Mark Brady said. Water rescue teams used inflatable boats to evacuate Upper Marlboro, ferrying 20 people and two dogs to safety Thursday.
A dog may have saved one household surrounded by floodwaters in Upper Marlboro. Firefighters thought they had cleared a flood zone when they heard a dog barking, Brady said. They returned to an appliance business with an upper-floor apartment and banged on the doors, shouting, “Fire department! Fire department!” The noise awoke the three sleeping residents who were shocked to find their town underwater. They climbed to the attic, where rescuers helped them and the dog, Rusty, escape to dry ground.
The American Red Cross assisted residents who were displaced from their homes.
