NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (AP) — The days may be numbered for whimsical designs on downtown fire hydrants in Niagara Falls.
City officials tell the Niagara Gazette (http://bit.ly/1tiPDnB ) that the Niagara Falls Water Board may paint over some of the designs crafted by volunteers in a public art initiative.
The program has expanded to more than 20 hydrants, painted in designs including a rainbow, a leprechaun, and a Dalmatian.
The water board’s attorney tells the newspaper the program could cause issues identifying hydrants, as water board hydrants are painted yellow while private industry ones are red.
He said there also could be union issues because maintenance on the hydrants is reserved for union labor.
City officials say they hope to work something out to keep the colorful hydrants.
