Final edition of Tucson Citizen hits the streets

TUCSON, Ariz. – The final print edition of Arizona’s oldest newspaper has hit the streets with a fitting last headline: Our Epitaph.

Saturday’s 48-page commemorative edition of the Tucson Citizen was filled with individual columns by editors and staffers and highlights of the Citizen’s 138 years of publication.

The Citizen will continue as an online-only opinion Web site.

The afternoon paper closed after owner Gannett Co. decided it could no longer be a viable enterprise. It published under a joint operating agreement with the morning Arizona Daily Star.

The Arizona attorney general’s office filed a motion Friday seeking to halt the closure, but a judge has not yet heard the case.
