While Golden Globe viewing parties aren’t as prevalent as Oscar viewing parties, that doesn’t mean you can’t try.
Some suggestions for a memorable Golden Globe viewing party:
— Print ballots. This is what John Hanshaw, founder and director of the Washington Film Institute, suggests. Make everyone you have over fill out his or her best guesses in the major categories, and the winner gets a prize. Don’t be shy — even the experts don’t know what the Hollywood Foreign Press might like this year.
— Act up! Another suggestion from Hanshaw is to have each of your guests assume the role of one of the best actor or actress nominees. If your character wins, you have to give a speech. Now’s your best chance to do an impression of The Dude when Jeff Bridges wins for best actor in “Crazy Heart.”
— Stock the bar. Maybe the most important suggestion comes from Jon Gann, organizer of the D.C. Shorts Film Festival and director of the D.C. Film Alliance: “Make sure you have plenty of wine and drinks,” he said. The Golden Globes essentially is a huge dinner party and is notorious for its mass consumption of alcohol. With Monday a holiday, why not get in the spirit?
