Cruz calls for VA’s McDonald to step down

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, is calling on Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert McDonald to step down after McDonald compared long wait times for veteran healthcare to lines at a Disney theme park.

“Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert McDonald’s recent remarks show a fundamental lack of respect for the veterans he’s been tasked to serve,” said Cruz, who just weeks ago dropped out of the race for the White House against Donald Trump.

Cruz joins Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., who also said McDonald needs to go after his remarks. McDonald has since walked back his comments and appears to be off the hook with GOP and Democratic leaders in the House and Senate, who have stopped short of calling for his resignation.

But Cruz believes he should step down, and said McDonald has shown he’s not the person to root out bad employees in the scandal-ridden VA.

“At this point, there can be no doubt there is a deep corruption within the VA, and we should not rest until it is rooted out, and our heroes receive the care that they earned,” Cruz said. “Secretary McDonald’s recent comments make clear that he is not the man to ensure that happens, and as a result, he should resign.”
