Biden to sign executive order on abortion access: Report

President Joe Biden will sign an executive order protecting access to abortion on Friday, according to a report.

The scope of the executive action is believed to be limited, according to the Associated Press. Biden is expected to order the Justice Department and the Department of Health and Human Services to fight efforts that would limit access to federally approved abortion medication or restrict travel across state lines to access abortion clinics.

Biden’s executive order will also attempt to protect women seeking abortions by directing agencies to educate medical providers and insurers about how and when to share privileged patient information with authorities.

The president has faced pressure from Democrats unhappy with his leadership on abortion policy since the Supreme Court’s June 24 ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade case.

“There is a leadership vacuum right now, and he’s not filling it,” said Adam Jentleson, an adviser to former Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV).

While governors in states such as Colorado, North Carolina, Maine, and Rhode Island have already taken executive actions strengthening abortion rights, the White House said on Wednesday that Biden is not being overshadowed.

“The president has also been very loud and very focused on those two issues,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said, regarding abortion access and gun control.

Since the Dobbs ruling, Biden has urged voters concerned with abortion access to support Democrats in November, stressing that congressional action codifying Roe into law is the solution.

“This fall, Roe is on the ballot. Personal freedoms are on the ballot,” Biden said the day of the ruling.
