Alberto, it’s about time. Soon-to-be-former Attorney General Gonzales’ resignation gives the Department of Justice a much needed chance to fling open its doors and windows and feel the cleaning breezes waft in. Gonzales’ tenure has been marked by scandal (sometimes overblown) and ineptitude. As the nation’s top cop, he became known more for obfuscation and incompetence than steady leadership. He will leave having damaged the credibility of his post and the institution of the Justice Department. The loyalty between Gonzales and Bush is admirable, but managing the U.S. government isn’t about keeping old friends in the fold. The American people come first.
For your viewing pleasure, below are a couple of the sketches that pointed me toward the final cartoon. In a way, I combined them a bit by having the janitor dumping Gonzales’ head into the waste bin. It givesthe cartoon a bit more action, I think. I had about three other ideas that could have worked just fine, too, but they didn’t have as much “oomph.”
