Biden generates post-debate buzz by quickly seizing on Pence fly moment with fundraising push

There’s no flies on Joe Biden.

The campaign of the Democratic presidential nominee was quick to capitalize on Vice President Mike Pence’s misfortune after a fly perched itself on his head during his debate against Biden’s running mate, Kamala Harris.

“Pitch in $5 to help this campaign fly,” Biden tweeted Wednesday, making fun of the development.

The two-term vice president and 36-year Delaware senator’s team also bought a fly-themed domain name, redirecting online traffic to a website designed to assist voters in casting their ballots.

The house fly that settled on Pence’s head during the vice presidential debate captured the attention of many viewers, as the two candidates swatted away moderator Susan Page of USA Today’s questions at Salt Lake City’s University of Utah.

Adam Meldrum, founder and president of AdVictory and a senior adviser to the Republican fundraising platform WinRed, kept an eye on tools that measure online tone conversation about candidates and the debate.

“It was kind of a more substanced and structured debate, and that’s something that people want to see and say they want to see. The massive amount of attention that you saw online, and the massive spike in interest, literally all revolved the fly landing on Mike Pence’s head.”

“When you look at what people want, and what they talk about, and what what interests them, and what sparks attention, is often not what they say it usually is.”

Two other viral moments that lit up social media during the otherwise substantive debate were reactions to Pence’s red eye and the California senator repeatedly telling the vice president, “I’m speaking.”
