Noonan on Obama’s redeclaration of war: “The Democrats for eight years had been removed from daily national responsibility-the party out of power always is-and in any case it’s always easier to question and criticize than to know and make a decision. But to have now a Democratic president surveying essentially the same history and data as his predecessor and coming to the same rough conclusion-we are in a real struggle with bad people, it will go a long time-was encouraging, and seemed to mark a two-party sharing of overall authority and investment.” Photos: Lighting of the National Thing We Surprisingly Still Call a Christmas Tree Medicare cuts will not be stripped from Senate bill. Eugene Robinson: “Give up, Obama!” We’re all anti-statists now: In the latest NBC/Wall Street Journal poll, only 23% of respondents said they trust the government “always or most of the time”–the smallest proportion in 12 years. The percentage of voters who think government should “do more to solve problems and meet the needs of people” has dropped 5 points since Obama’s first weeks in office, while that of those who think government should leave more things “to businesses” rose 8 points. The shift is especially noticeable among independent voters, a small plurality of whom wanted government to “do more” after Obama took office; now–by a margin of 17–they think government does “too much.” Obama refused to be photographed with the F-22. Henninger: Science is on the credibility bubble. Good news: Obama asked jobs summit talkers to “bring their A-game,” and they came away with some “great ideas.” Wonder what the salary runs on a “great idea” these days.
