Contraband fireworks have been turned in to the Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department in the past weeks, according to a department spokesman, but not in the numbers seen in past years.
“It’s going a little bit slower than in past years,” Mark Brady said.
Brady said he wasn’t sure why fewer than 100 pieces of fireworks had been turned in as of Friday, but he wondered if the decrease could be explained by more people becoming familiar with the county’s strict fireworks laws.
“Everything from the smallest to the largest is illegal,” Brady said.
Under the amnesty, county residents can turn in fireworks to the department and receive free admission tickets to Six Flags America.
Fireworks seized by or turned in to the department will be used in training, Brady said.
“We do put ’em to good use drilling our bomb squad and our explosives canine dogs,” he said.
