Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said Tuesday that the White House has not responded to his request to see the transcripts of President Trump’s meeting with the Russian foreign minister and ambassador last week.
Schumer, who made a public call for the transcripts in his Senate floor speech Tuesday morning, repeated the request at the Senate Democratic leadership’s weekly press conference Tuesday, but said that they have not heard back about the request.
“We have directly communicated with the White House. We have not gotten any reaction,” Schumer said.
The New York Democrat talked down chatter coming from House Democrats who are calling for Trump to be impeached. He echoed comments from House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer, D-Md., who said Tuesday that an investigation and facts are needed before talk about impeachment can get anywhere.
“Every member is entitled to his or her own opinion — House and Senate,” Schumer said. “My view is we need a thorough investigation and we need to get all of the facts, and then we’ll come to conclusions.”
“Our step now is to get a thorough investigation, that involves the releasing of the transcripts and the tapes, that involves questioning [Deputy] Attorney General [Rod] Rosenstein,” Schumer said. “And most of all that means that our intelligence committee has to move forward in a very strong and comprehensive way.”
