President Trump said Wednesday that the GOP has “great unity” despite a series of attacks over the past week from Republicans, two of whom are retiring after 2018.
“We have, actually, great unity in the Republican party,” Trump told reporters at the White House on Wednesday. “Look, they have to do their thing. We have great unity. If you look at what happened yesterday at the meeting, we had, I guess, virtually every senator, including John McCain. We had a great conversation yesterday, John McCain and myself about the military.”
Trump met Tuesday with senators on Capitol Hill to discuss a package of tax cuts that Republicans hope to put on the president’s desk by the end of the year.
Sens. Bob Corker of Tennessee and Jeff Flake of Arizona, both retiring Republicans, have gone after Trump this week for his brash behavior in office and raised questions about growing rifts within the Republican Party.
“I think we had a tremendous — I called it a love fest. It was almost a love fest. Maybe it was a love fest. We got standing ovations,” Trump said of his meeting Tuesday on Capitol Hill. “There is great unity. If you look at the Democrats with Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton, that’s a mess. There’s great unity in the Republican Party.”
