Biden administration wary of Supreme Court intervention on eviction rules, White House says

The White House said some administration officials are concerned that challenging the Supreme Court’s June ruling on the federal eviction moratorium could lead justices to strike down the use of emergency funds to keep people from getting kicked out of their homes.

Gene Sperling, a top economic adviser to President Joe Biden, responded during Monday’s White House press briefing to a question about whether extending the moratorium could be blocked by the Supreme Court, as happened partially in a ruling this spring.

“It is a consideration that I think, you know, may have affected some of us,” Sperling said.

Later in the briefing, White House Press secretary Jen Psaki added that Biden “is keeping the option open” for future legal action to stop evictions.

Earlier Monday, the White House said it was protecting at-risk renters and landlords by calling on states and local governments “to extend or put in place evictions moratoria for at the least the next two months.”
