Volleyball player sues university alleging it pushed her off team for conservative views

A former volleyball player at the University of Oklahoma is suing her coaches and the school, alleging she was labeled a racist and excluded from the team for her conservative political views.

Kylee McLaughlin filed suit against her former coach Lindsey Gray-Walton, assistant coach Kyle Walton, and the school for infringing on her First Amendment rights, according to Fox News.

In total, McLaughlin alleged five complaints and is suing for at least $75,000 in each one.

McLaughlin alleges that she was “frozen out” of the volleyball program last year because she held different political opinions than her coaches, and she ultimately transferred to another university after being forced to take a redshirt year.

The former Oklahoma Sooner claims her team was forced to watch a documentary on the incarceration of black people in America and said that team discussions would sometimes be critical of former President Donald Trump.

Additionally, McLaughlin responded to a social media news story where some were calling a University of Texas school spirit song, The Eyes of Texas, racist. McLaughlin commented with laughing emojis because she didn’t believe the song was racist. She was castigated by her teammates, forced to delete her comment by her coach, and instructed to apologize to the University of Texas volleyball team, according to the lawsuit.

McLaughlin alleges that her teammates and coaches accused her of being racist, and she was told she could either transfer, lose her scholarship and stay at the school as a student, or take a redshirt year, which entailed keeping her scholarship but practicing separately from the team. She was also required to take more than 10 hours of online diversity and inclusion training as part of a “Growth Plan.”

“Although (McLaughlin) supports equality, social justice, and finds racism despicable, she disagreed with the WOKE culture and critical race theory advocated and practiced by two of her coaches who are the Defendants in this action,” the lawsuit says.

In the lawsuit, McLaughlin says the school violated her First Amendment rights by “intentionally inflicting emotional distress by alleging that she was a racist and homophobe.”

“It’s not the practice of the university to comment on pending litigation,” Oklahoma University’s athletic department said in a statement to the Washington Examiner. “OU is aware of the suit and will respond as appropriate.
