Officer shot, suspect killed in Prince George’s County

An officer was shot and a suspect killed during a standoff in Prince George’s County Saturday morning.

Police said they waited outside the District Heights residence of 22-year-old James Coleman  for about two hours before they convinced him to come out. Coleman was suspected of killing two  people in an Anne Arundel County parking lot Friday night.

But when Coleman came out, he came out with a shot gun and an assault rifle. He fired at an officer, wounding him in the upper and lower torso, before six other officers shot back, killing Coleman.

Coleman was pronounced dead outside his home on the 8100 block of Rydal Road.

The officer’s injuries were not life-threatening, and he is expected to recover, police spokesman Corporal Henry Tippett said.

Today’s shooting means that, so far this year, suspects have shot three Prince George’s County police officers — an unusually high number in Tippett’s experience.
