Police suspect same man in 5 N.Va. heists

Authorities say a bank robber who started out in the Manassas area by knocking off three banks has now struck for the second time in Fairfax County.

Fairfax County police believe the man most recently robbed a Wachovia bank at 7620 Little River Turnpike on March 16 when he passed a note demanding money to a teller. The teller complied, and the robber left the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The robber, whom police describe as a 6-foot-tall white man in his 20s, robbed his first bank in Fairfax County on Feb. 19. In that case, he passed a note claiming he had a weapon to a teller at a BB&T bank at 6130 Redwood Square Center in Centreville. Once again, the teller handed over cash and the robber fled on foot.

The FBI became involved with the case after the February robbery.

Before that, the robber had focused entirely on the Manassas area, first appearing in the Nov. 12 robbery of the Synergy One Federal Credit Union at 8400 Chatsworth Drive, just outside the Manassas City boundary. On Nov. 30, he robbed the United Bank at 9872 Liberia Ave. His final Prince William County robbery was Dec. 28, when police say he robbed a Northwest Federal Credit Union at 9730 Liberia Ave.

The robber has never displayed a weapon, although he typically implies he has one. Anyone with information on any of these cases is asked to call Manassas City Crime Solvers at 703-330-0330. A $1,000 reward has been offered for any information that leads to an arrest or indictment in the robberies. Information can also be passed to Manassas police at 703-257-8042.
