Drivers’ wandering eyes are causing congestion across the new span of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, something officials say is nearly as bad and sometimes worse than congestion on the old span, officials said Tuesday.
The new span, which opened just 10 days ago amid much fanfare, has drivers “taking it all in” and forgetting to hit their gas pedals, officials said. And while the new three-lane northbound span was promised to bring some relief because of its wider lanes, smooth pavement, and full and partial shoulders for disabled vehicles and emergency, drivers have yet to see it.
Like with all new projects of this scale, officials said it usually takes a couple of weeks for drivers to get used to the newness of their surroundings.
