Warren: Law needed to make presidents reveal tax returns

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., said Tuesday that the U.S. needs a law requiring presidents to make their tax returns public. She said President Trump’s administration was “neck deep” in personal conflicts of interest and the president’s refusal to divulge his returns or divest from his family “set the example” for his aides.

“There is a lot we can do about this. We can pass legislation to require presidents to disclose their tax returns so that the American people can see any secret dealing,” the Massachusetts Democrat said. She made the comments as part of a keynote address at an event hosted by the liberal Center for American Progress.

Warren also said that President Trump reportedly revealed intelligence secrets because of a “desire to impress his Russian buddies” and because he “admires [Vladimir] Putin’s Russia.” She argued that Trump’s argument that divulging the information was within his prerogative as president was proof that he was “trying to set himself above the law.”
