House Democrats Tuesday sent letters to the White House counsel Pat Cipollone ordering Trump administration officials to preserve documents and emails, including material lawmakers have subpoenaed over the past four years.
“As the Trump Administration prepares for the transition of power to the new Biden Administration, we write to remind you that all Executive Office of the President employees and officials must comply with record preservation obligations set forth in federal law and preserve information relevant to congressional oversight,” the Democratic chairs of 21 House committees wrote to Cipollone.
House Democrats and the Trump administration have battled for years over subpoenas for testimony and documents. The Trump administration has often refused to provide information and has blocked testimony, citing executive privilege.
House Democrats continue to seek access to the material.
“You are obligated to ensure that any information previously requested by Congress—and any other information that is required by law to be preserved—is saved and appropriately archived in a manner that is easily retrievable,” Democrats wrote.
President Trump has not conceded the race and is calling for recounts in several states. Major media outlets have declared Democrat Joe Biden the winner.
