Customs officers searching a Canadian mail truck had a jarring Valentine’s Day surprise.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in a Wednesday press release that officers in Port Huron, Michigan, seized a human brain inside a canning jar while conducting a mail search on Feb. 14.
The organ was discovered at the Blue Water Bridge crossing between Michigan and the Canadian province of Ontario. Officials had been conducting a routine search of the mail crossing over when they discovered a shipment labeled “Antique Teaching Specimen,” which contained the brain.

According to CBP, the body part did not have any paperwork or proper documentation to support its legal entry into the country. The package originated in Toronto and was bound for Kenosha, Wisconsin, a city of about 100,000.
“Individuals looking to import shipments such as this, need to remember that the Center for Disease Control and Prevention has a strict Import Permit Program that must be adhered to,” said Area Port Director Michael Fox. “This is just another great example of just one of the many things CBP officers do to protect our nation on a daily basis.”
CBP has been in contact with the CDC about the discovery.
