PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Efforts to step up enforcement of Rhode Island’s seat belt law and encourage safe driving during Thanksgiving week resulted in hundreds of tickets and several arrests.
State police say 10 people were arrested for allegedly driving under the influence and 214 were issued summonses for seat belt or child restraint violations. Authorities also issued 749 moving violations.
Police across the state had been targeting impaired or intoxicated drivers, aggressive drivers, speeders, those caught texting while driving and other traffic violators in the days before and after the holiday.
State police chief Col. Steven O’Donnell called the DUI enforcement initiative aggressive and said the “Click It or Ticket” campaign was productive.
