GOP senator: FBI’s Comey as ‘popular as cholera’

Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., said Thursday that FBI Director James Comey is as popular as a bacterial disease that leads to vomiting and diarrhea, as lawmakers from both sides have accused him of helping their political opponents.

“It’s no secret, Comey doesn’t get invited to many parties on Capitol Hill,” Kennedy said on CNN. “He’s about as popular as cholera.”

“But I respect that about him,” he added. “The impression I get of Comey is, he’s going to do his job, and he doesn’t much care who gets mad at him.”

Comey testified Wednesday at a hearing in which he said he felt he had to tell Congress that the FBI was re-opening its investigation into Clinton’s emails with just a week to go in the election, and that saying nothing would have been “catastrophic.”

Comey also said the FBI was consistent in its decision not to reveal details about a probe into the Trump campaign, since that investigation was not as far along as the Clinton investigation.

That split has led Democrats to charge that Comey acted in a way that helped Trump defeat Clinton. But Republicans also complained when Comey announced he would not recommend criminal charges against Clinton for using a private email server and exposing classified information in the process.
