Jeff Flake: Many Republicans fear Biden

Former Republican Sen. Jeff Flake said former Vice President Joe Biden is a threat to the GOP in their quest to keep President Trump in the White House.

“Joe Biden strikes fear in a lot of Republicans. He can speak to those states that President Trump won, in the Rust Belt in particular, and he’s seen as more of a centrist,” Flake, of Arizona, a CBS contributor, told the network Tuesday. “He knows how to work with the Senate, with the Congress, and I think that’s certainly one that worries Republicans.”

Biden has yet to enter the 2020 presidential race, but has led several polls among candidates and potential contenders. He teased a potential campaign announcement Tuesday while giving remarks at a conference held by the International Association of Fire Fighters.

“I appreciate the energy you showed when you got up here — save it a little longer, I may need it in a few weeks,” Biden said. “Be careful what you wish for.”

Flake, for his part, has been a virulent critic of Trump’s presidency. He served a single six-year term in the Senate after 12 years in the House. But Flake’s opposition to Trump’s political style, if not his policy agenda, led Flake to call it quits in electoral politics after the 2018 elections.
