Emergency workers evacuated about 30 apartment building residents in Arlington Sunday night after a retaining wall collapsed at a nearby construction site, creating a landslide and what observers called a “sinkhole.”
Officials expect eastbound Clarendon Boulevard to remain closed through the evening rush hour to all traffic, including pedestrians. The Rosslyn exit off northbound Route 110 is also closed.
Approximately 50 feet of a construction pit’s three-block-long retaining wall collapsed Sunday night around 8:30 p.m., an Arlington fire department spokesman said. The Swansen Apartments, which border the construction site, were evacuated because of fears of another structural failure.
The fire department left the scene early Monday morning, said spokesman Gregg Karl. The police and the county’s inspection services are evaluating the site.
