A new super PAC, run by a top Democratic bundler, hopes to bring both Democrats and Republicans together to stop Donald Trump from winning the White House in 2016.
The Keep America Great PAC will be chaired by Jon Cooper, a Democrat who raised millions of dollars for President Obama in 2008 and 2012, and also led the fundraising efforts for Vice President Joe Biden’s potential run for the Democratic nomination through the Draft Biden PAC. Although a Democrat will be at the helm, Keep America Great aims to appeal to Republicans who aren’t on board with a Trump candidacy, Bernie Sanders supporters who have become disaffected by the process, and libertarians looking for another option.
“We’re going to have to ramp up our staff very quickly because it’s obvious we’re filling a void,” Cooper told the Washington Examiner. “There are tons of folks that aren’t ready to support Donald Trump or Hillary.”
He added, “We have lots of people who want to be active in politics but don’t know who they’re going to vote for. But they know it won’t be Donald Trump.”
The group plans to fundraise through grassroots efforts in order to run television ads and digital marketing campaigns against the presumptive GOP nominee in the coming months. Cooper explained that the PAC already has a list of one dozen A-list celebrities lining up to help the PAC and in the coming weeks with fundraising events in New York City and Los Angeles. The PAC also hopes to spread to hundreds of college campuses.
“What’s unique about it is that there are Pro-Trump and Pro-Clinton PACs out there. But we’re not supporting any candidate—whether people are pro Hillary, Bernie, libertarian or write in, it doesn’t matter,” Cooper explained. “The goal is to make sure Donald Trump doesn’t become president. It’s really fascinating how quickly this is coming together and how the support is growing.”
So far, they’ve had people from every political end of the spectrum sign up to pitch in. The PAC hopes to expand their efforts in the coming weeks and maybe even have a presence at the Republican and Democratic conventions in July. Cooper noted that they hope “maybe another candidate will spring up” in the coming weeks.
Keep America Great does not intend to hold protests.
Cooper said, “I think this is going to be the easiest job I’ve ever had in the political world because all I have to do each day is repeat what Trump said the day before. We are going to point out his record.”
