The man who shot three men and then killed himself at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii has been identified.
Gabriel Romero, 22, was revealed to be the perpetrator of the Wednesday shooting that killed two men and wounded a third. He was an active-duty sailor assigned to the USS Columbia, a 360-foot submarine. The shooting took place at one of the dry docks at about 2:30 p.m. local time.
Information as to why Romero opened fire, and if the victims were targeted or random, has not yet been released. Romero used an M4 rifle to kill the victims and then used his M9 service pistol to shoot himself in the head.
“Our thoughts are with the families of the victims and everyone involved,” said Rear Adm. Robert Chadwick, commander of Navy Region Hawaii. “This is certainly a tragedy for everyone here.”
The two victims who died were taken to the hospital in extremely critical condition and later pronounced dead. The third man, a 36-year-old, remains hospitalized in guarded condition. The names of the victims have not yet been released.
On Thursday, the White House passed along a message to reporters that President Trump was monitoring the situation, but he has not publicly commented on the matter.
The USS Columbia was under repair at the shipyard during the shooting. The submarine has a crew of about 150 and was commissioned in 1995.
A motive for the shooting has not been released. The shooting took place just days before the 78th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
