Constellation shines brightly

Fledgling troupe Constellation Theatre Company’s production of Mary Zimmerman’s “The Arabian Nights” was one of last fall’s most pleasant revelations. Now Constellation is back with a revival of Bertolt Brecht’s 1943 satire “The Good Woman of Setzuan,” which proves that this is definitely a theatrical company to be reckoned with.

Translated into English by long-time Brecht collaborator Eric Bentley, “The Good Woman of Setzuan” tells the tale of Shen Te (Katie Atkinson), a sweet-natured prostitute living in a small province of China. When three gods (Catherine Deadman, John Geoffrion and Kenny Littlejohn) turn up in search of a “good person,” Shen Te is the only one in the town who offers them shelter for the evening. In reward for her kindness, the gods give her a substantial monetary reward.

Determined to turn over a new leaf, Shen Te uses the money to open a tobacco shop. When she finds herself besieged by moochers and loafers taking advantage of her altruism, Shen Te is forced to defend herself by inventing a male alter ego named Shui Ta, a ruthless, hard-hearted businessman.

Atkinson, who was so memorable as Scheherezade in “The Arabian Nights,” gives another first-rate performance here. She is backed up by an equally wonderful supporting ensemble, many of them playing multiple roles.

Another holdover from “The Arabian Nights” is composer and percussionist Tom Teasley, whose beautiful original score is a crucial element of this production.

Once again, director Allison Arkell Stockman demonstrates a facility for eliciting amusing, spontaneous work from her actors and a flair for impressive visual imagery. A.J. Guban’s set and lighting, Yvette M. Ryan’s costumes and Christopher Baines’ sound designs are also worthy of mention.

Constellation’s “The Good Woman of Setzuan” is a welcome reminder that enthusiasm, imagination and just plain raw talent trump big budgets every time. Certain overpriced and overrated local behemoths would benefit from that lesson.
