Thai soldier kills 20 in mall shooting spree

A mass shooting in Thailand left 20 people dead and dozens more injured, and now a manhunt for a Thai soldier accused of being the gunman is underway.

Jakraphanth Thomma, a Thai military sergeant, is suspected of killing his commanding officer before going on the killing spree Saturday in the city of Nakhon Ratchasima at a shopping center.

“We can’t confirm if there are any hostages taken. But we believe he (the shooter) is still holding inside Terminal 21 shopping mall. We are working on this,” Lt. Gen. Thanya Kiatsarn told CNN.

Police said they hope to capture the suspect. “Both police and military forces have been deployed to the area,” police spokesman Col. Krissana Pattanacharoen said.

Thomma, 32, reportedly posted images of his rampage online. Security personnel have evacuated people from the mall, and the suspect’s mother is at the scene in an attempt to convince him to turn himself over to the police.

Authorities currently do not know a motive for the attack.
