President Bush’s good friend, the attorney general, says he won’t resign because he wants to fix the broken image of the Department of Justice. Gonzales (and Bush) ignores the fact that he is the person ultimately responsible for its recent tarnished reputation. From the botched firings of federal prosecutors to the memorandum on harsh interrogation methods to the dogged fight for domestic eavesdropping, he has been the bungling architect allalong. True, he brought some of that baggage from his prior stint as Bush’s counsel, but it doesn’t change the reality everyone else can see: Gonzales damaged goods. It’s strange Bush hasn’t already asked him to resign.
In a way, it would be sad to see Gonzales go, because I do like caricaturing him. He reminds me of one of those wishing trolls with the colored hair that sticks up.
