Officials confirm Potomac coal plant not needed for power supply

Electricity providers have confirmed that the coal-fired Potomac River Generating Station in Alexandria is not needed to supply power to the Washington, D.C. region — news that puts the plant on track for closing by Oct. 1, 2012.

The plant’s owner, GenOn, announced in August its decision to close the plant. Activists have been complaining for years that the plant releases pollutants that damage human health in Alexandria and the District.

GenOn representatives said earlier that the decision to close the plant was economic — it wasn’t generating enough profit for the company to justify installing more pricey pollution controls.
