District offering ‘live near your work’ incentive

D.C. officials on Tuesday announced a grant-matching program for city employers who help finance workers buying homes in the city to be near their job. Called the Live Near Your Work pilot program, Mayor Vincent Gray said Gallaudet University and American University arethe first two partners in the program.

The pilot is a matching home-ownership grant program created by the D.C. Office of Planning that will match contributions by major D.C. employers of up to $6,000 per participating employee toward down payment and closing costs when an employee purchases a home in the District near their job or close to public-transit stations, according to a release from they mayor’s office.

The District has committed $200,000 to support the LNYW pilot initiative, the first of its kind for the city. Gallaudet and American are each slated to receive $60,000 in grant funds, according to the mayor.

“The Live Near Your Work program is a great incentive to encourage Gallaudet University employees to become a part of the community,” Gallaudet President T. Alan Hurwitz said. “This initiative will help the environment, support area businesses, contribute to the D.C. tax base, reduce congestion and save our employees time and money.”
