Donald Trump tried to put all chatter to rest Wednesday about the star shape his campaign tweeted out over the weekend, saying the situation has been “very much resolved.”
Before a rally in Cincinnati Wednesday night, Trump told local news WKRC that the star tweeted out was not the Star of David, but rather a star or a sheriff’s star — a point his campaign has pushed since immediate blowback. He also tweeted out a picture Wednesday of a book from the movie “Frozen” featuring a similar six-pointed star on the cover, wondering where the outrage was for that as well.
The clip was first flagged by BuzzFeed News.
“So ridiculous,” Trump told the TV station. “First of all, I have a Jewish son-in-law, who’s a great guy. I didn’t even put that out. You know, they put out a star and the media, the phony media, says, ‘Oh, that’s the Star of David.’ It wasn’t the Star of David, it was just a star. And they put corrupt Hillary Clinton in it and they started saying that was the Star of David. It wasn’t the Star of David, it was a star.
“It’s just the corrupt media. I mean they’re almost as corrupt as Hillary Clinton, frankly,” Trump said. “It was so ridiculous. And a lot of people have called it out for what it was. But it was so totally ridiculous. And I think that problem now frankly has been very much resolved to my way because when you take a star — when you take a star, it could’ve been a sheriff’s star, it could’ve been anything. It was just a star, and they started saying it was the Star of David. It’s just the corrupt and very dishonest media doing that.”
Trump also spoke about the issue during the Cincinnati rally, telling supporters that the media was “racially profiling” by suggesting the six-pointed star was the Star of David.
Soon after a firestorm erupted over the tweet over the weekend, Trump’s team deleted the tweet in question and replaced it with one featuring a similar graphic and a circle featuring the term “Most Corrupt Candidate Ever!” on top of an image of Hillary Clinton.
