Texas Sen. Ted Cruz railed against Donald Trump as a politically correct politician because of the billionaire’s opposition to a controversial North Carolina law seen as restricting transgender individuals’ bathroom usage.
Cruz supports the restrictions on who may enter the bathrooms in public schools, while Trump said the legislation is harmful.
“Grown adult men, strangers should not be alone in a bathroom with little girls. And that’s not conservative or liberal, that’s not Republican or Democrat, that’s basic common sense,” Cruz said at a rally in Maryland. “But you know a few months ago, Donald told us he could be the most politically correct person on Earth, and I guess he’s showing us what that looks like. I am waiting with anticipation for the new baseball caps: Make PC Great Again.”
Cruz argued that Trump’s position aligned him with President Obama and Hillary Clinton, and asked the audience, “Have we gone stark raving nuts?”
Earlier on Thursday morning, Cruz appeared on Glenn Beck’s radio program and defended former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling for making controversial remarks about the bathroom restrictions that aligned with Cruz’s own beliefs.
The Texas senator has often cited his desire to keep men out of the bathrooms with his young daughters as part of his reasoning for supporting restrictions on the bathroom usage.
After departing Maryland, Cruz will head to Indiana where he will campaign and visit with the Hoosier State’s Republican governor, Mike Pence.
