A man arrested in connection with a truck attack that killed a dozen people in Berlin Monday has been released, the Associated Press reports, with German authorities citing a lack of evidence.
The AP writes:
A German official also said police have yet to a recover a pistol believed used in the killing of a Polish truck driver who was supposed to be delivering steel with the truck used in the attack.
Added Berlin’s chief of police, “We may still have a dangerous criminal out there.”
While the rampage that took 12 lives and injured almost 50 others is still being investigated, leading global officials have put the incident in the context of it being the latest terror incident to visit Europe. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the assumption has to be that the violence was a “terrorist attack,” and the White House said President Barack Obama told Merkel “that no attack could sway our determination—and that of our German allies—to defeat terrorism in all of its forms” during a phone call.
President-elect Donald Trump identified the attack as one of “terror” on Monday, adding that “it is only getting worse” around the world. “The civilized world must change thinking!” he tweeted.
Per the AP, German authorities are calling the attack a terrorist act “that had all the hallmarks of Islamic extremism.” More from them here.
