Tornadoes devastate Alabama and Georgia

Tornadoes ripped through the South on Thursday and Friday, leaving devastation in their paths.

The latest in a string of severe weather outbreaks hit Newnan, Georgia, early Friday morning, where a tornado touched down after midnight and ripped through the historic downtown. Authorities said at least one person died from the storm.

That came one day after a series of tornadoes shredded parts of Alabama — including Calhoun County, north of Birmingham, where at least five people died, and winds reportedly reached more than 100 mph.

Known as a supercell, the storm spawned at least six tornadoes in Alabama and stretched into Georgia.
