NEW YORK (AP) — A Staten Island water tunnel project that had been delayed almost 18 months by damage caused by Superstorm Sandy will be completed in the fall.
Officials said Thursday that construction to the Staten Island Siphon, which resumed in April, is more than halfway done.
The tunnel will connect Staten Island and Brooklyn under the New York Harbor, and allow the removal of two existing water mains that are nearly a century old.
A second phase of the project will deepen the Anchorage Channel, enabling a new generation of cargo ships to use the harbor. That phase is expected to be completed by next spring.
