NBC announced Wednesday that The Kelly Clarkson Show will shift into the afternoon time slot currently held by Ellen DeGeneres’s talk show, which is ending after the 2021-22 season.
The show hosted by Clarkson, a singer who became famous after winning the first season of American Idol in 2002, is expected to fill its 3 p.m. time block by next year, a development which comes after the network confirmed on May 12 that the Ellen DeGeneres Show would end following its 19th season.
“‘The Kelly Clarkson Show’ is one of the most optimistic success stories in first-run syndication,” said Tracie Wilson, executive vice president of NBCUniversal Syndication Studios.
“We’re working on some big plans for Season 3 and are looking forward to becoming the premier show in daytime for years to come,” Wilson said in a statement to Deadline.
ELLEN DEGENERES TO END TALK SHOW IN 2022
The announcement of DeGeneres’s show comes after multiple reports of harassment, racism, and bullying from current and former members of DeGeneres’s staff, which prompted an internal investigation from parent company Warner Brothers in 2020. DeGeneres apologized in July for letting her show’s workplace fall from a “place of happiness,” saying that she would “ensure this does not happen again.”
Clarkson’s show recently received six Daytime Emmy nominations. Clarkson is also the recipient of last year’s Outstanding Entertainment Talk Show Hosts award.
NBC did not name a date for Clarkson’s takeover but said the show would move into “leading time periods” on its 200-plus affiliate stations by 2022. The show currently airs at 2 p.m. EST, one hour before Ellen DeGeneres’s show.
